Original Katsushika Hokusai Triptych: "Life, Nature & Myth" (Manga Studies)

A curated acquisition by Fox & Wedge.

This exceptional triptych features three original woodblock printed pages from the Hokusai Manga, the legendary sketchbook series by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849).

While Hokusai is best known for landscapes, his Manga was intended to be an encyclopedia of the entire world. This rare three-panel presentation perfectly encapsulates that ambition, featuring three distinct themes:

The Mythological (Right):

A dynamic study of Shishi (Lion Dogs), revered guardians in Japanese folklore, rendered with swirling, animated fur.

The Natural (Centre):

A delicate observation of sparrows and finches (Suzume), capturing their quick, fluttering movements.

The Human (Left):

A social study contrasting formal court figures in robes with everyday laborers, showcasing Hokusai’s ability to capture posture and character with a few brushstrokes.

Conservation & Framing:

To unify these three distinct pages, the piece has been housed in a premium conservation setting:

Gallery Triptych Mount: Custom-cut triple window mount allows the viewer to appreciate the narrative breadth of Hokusai’s work in a single glance.

Natural Timber Frame: Encased in a solid oak timber frame that reflects the Japandi/Minimalist aesthetic and complements the cream tones of the antique paper.

UV Protection: Fitted with conservation-grade glazing to preserve the 19th-century ink for future generations.
